I received an email today by a journalist from a very well known Greek newspaper which made me wonder how popular political betting is. The 2008 US presidential election is in 2 weeks and online betting on Obama or McCain has exceeded 10 million euros just in the Betfair markets. I guess people are not only interested in who the next US President will be but also betting on their own political prediction.
This is not the first time I comment on political betting. I have already discussed online betting in elections before when the Greek elections took place in September 2007. Back then I talked about the arbitraging opportunities in online betting among the various betting companies and how a political debate can influence the betting odds. What surprised me though was the traffic those posts attracted to my sports blog from search engines and Google in particular.
My Google Analytics graphs show an enormous increase in incoming traffic from search engines when the keywords "Greek elections" and "betting" were combined together at that time. My sports blog was found in the top places if not in the first one among the search results. Of course as soon as the elections were over, the specific traffic wore off.

I guess online betting on the 2008 US presidential election will reach its peak in the following days, so if you want to get some additional traffic to your gambling blogs nowadays, most possibly from Americans surfing the web, you will need to write an article about the US elections. And now it's the perfect time. |
